Thanks docweb. I always get a pile of books at Christmas, on the second last one now so time to cast about for something new. I'll check it out.

"Midnight Hockey" by Bill Gaston. Written by a guy who obviously played a lot better hockey than I ever have (major junior, varsity, and semipro in Europe). Now he teaches at Uni of Victoria.

Flat out funny and dead-on with description of "life" in beer league and Oldtimers.

Pat: The habsosphère stand divided (with fire and brimstone all over the place; good times): either Carbo was at long last canned because of his inabilities as a coach, or he was so some part of upper management (not necessarily Gainey) can look good "turning the season around by a decisive move" (of the last 16 games, the Oilers are, I believe, the toughest matchup after the hawks, devils and Boston, one each). I am of the latter group; they are 5-2 since coming back from that date-rape of a western swing, Price is stopping pucks again (halak never really faltered, it just seems they don't like him...). I say it stinks of upper-management shenanigans but hey, time will tell.

Still, Gainey is keeping Tanguay Koivu and Kostitsyn together, so he'll ride them into the playoffs and then we'll see.

Olivier - they're terrified of the wrath of Penner in the PB - Laraque is not really hurt and Carbonneau resigned ;)

The Carbonneau situation is a weird one for sure, so much of their problems are due to shoddy goaltending, I thought.

Having said that I think that they are a better club then they have shown.

I don't care what the numbers say, Penner could be better. This idea that everyone should be just happy with what he brings when its obvious he could bring so much more doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I can see why he makes macT mental.

Having said that MacT has gone over the top with this one. Either he knows he is safe or this is his hill to die on, as LT says. The Oilers are trying to make the playoffs. I would say that having Penner in the lineup would make that a better chance then having him in the PB, on the bench etc.

I honest to god feel sorry for Penner, a guy who makes roughly 43 times what I do in salary. He's getting jerked around by a coach who has completely lost any grasp he once had on common sense.

If Craig MacTavish is trying to win games to save his job, he sure has a weird way of showing it. Either that or he knows, no matter what happens, he's safe and secure until he decides it's time to go.

If Gainey can fire Carbonneau, Lowe better damn well be able to dust MacT if this team doesn't make the second season. And even if they do, is four-and-out vs. Detroit or San Jose enough to justify keeping him around? I certainly don't think so, and I hope Darryl Katz sees it the same way.

Ok, What is going on. Penner has more spin doctoring than the republicans coming out of strip joint.
I will give Penner his numbers. I have watched him play enough to know that there is underlying issue in his game. He does not finish checks, when the going gets tough he takes a powder. He has been benched, Press boxed, called out privately and publically. Does he want to float through the game thats not the Oiler way. It is get on your horse make something happen.
Penner is a passenger the goodship Oilers, We thought is was going to be a leader a go to guy but he is Unionized civic worker. He gets what is needed to be done but only when told. If it is a grey area he will call work to rule.
Zorg and Red Bull these boys got some jump. Will they go where the sledding is tough. You ask them to Jump they ask how high. They will try and invent some stuff. You never know a big hit a brushby on a goalie they are all building blocks to a complete game.
Penner will go down his wing toss puck blindly to middle, get set up like a Xmas tree and finish one out 6 chances. Since he got so many chances his numbers are good.

There's audio from noted underwhelmer, Geoff Paukovich,
